The Star Phantoms are a grim and isolationist Loyalist Space Marine Chapter from the 23rd “Sentinel” Founding, known for their overwhelming firepower, reverence for martyrdom, and a shadowed history marked by tragedy and resilience.
Founded in the early 38th Millennium, the Star Phantoms were created to secure xenos-contested regions on the Imperium’s fringes. Their exact gene-seed origin remains unknown, though some suspect ties to the Dark Angels — a claim both Chapters deny. The Star Phantoms are deeply isolationist, often operating alone and showing little regard for collateral damage. Their Chapter cult centers on death and martyrdom, honoring the fallen above the living and embracing elaborate funerary rites. This belief system manifests in their iconography, which features death’s heads and sand-timers, and in their battlefield ethos: life is transient, but a warrior’s death must be meaningful.
The Chapter suffered catastrophic losses during the destruction of their original homeworld, Haakoneth, which was consumed by a Warp rift and a full-scale Hrud migration. Forced to flee, they became a fleet-based Chapter until the Badab War, where they played a decisive role in the final assault against the Astral Claws. Their victory earned them overlordship of the Badab Sector and a new fortress-monastery on the ice moon Jahga. Known for their preference for Drop Pod assaults, heavy weapons, and brutal tactics, the Star Phantoms continue to serve the Imperium with cold efficiency, often contributing to the Deathwatch while maintaining their solemn distance from other Imperial forces
